Hello, my name is Akoua and I am 25 years old. I am originally from Pennsylvania. Currently, I am a graduate student at George Mason University. During the past two years, while serving in the Peace Corps in Africa, the children in the village would frequently visit my house. We would sing songs, draw and color, and play games. The time I spent with the kids was the highlight of my days.

I have always been very active and like playing sports. On numerous occasions, I have coached young, aspiring softball players at clinics. In addition, I have mentored and tutored inner city middle school students. Family members and friends would often ask me to watch their children because I am responsible and I love spending time with kids. In my experiences, I have learned interacting with children is an incredibly rewarding experience. Their curiosity and energy keeps us on our feet and it’s a challenge I embrace with enthusiasm. Hi Im Alison and I’m a student at George Mason University studying nutrition. I have lived in Fairfax my whole life and Ive been babysitting for as long as I can remember. I have two older brothers and one younger sister, so I’m able to be rough and tough with the little tykes, while being caring a gentle with the princesses. I am an instructor at George Mason University, where I teach English, Literature studies, and Creative Writing, as well as University 100, a transitional course for freshmen. I love working with freshmen, and believe that I have developed a lot of patience and compassion over the years through teaching. I have an M.A. in English Literature, and am finishing an MFA in Creative Writing with a focus on poetry. Over the last year I have worked as a sitter for a family with two boys, ages 1 and 5. I worked hard to bring something new and exciting to the table each week, from finger painting, writing stories together, reading many books, and playing “firetruck,” to eventually working on a creative project together. I have spent time with many of my friends’ children over the years, babysitting on various occasions, or just taking trips to the park together. I bring energy and creativity with me to each job. Hi my name is Angie Bonilla and I’m 20 years old. I am a sophomore at George Mason University double majoring in Accounting and Business Management with a minor in Spanish. I was born in Miami Beach, Florida but I currently live in Falls Church. My mother is Peruvian and my father is Puerto Rican. Hi, I’m Anna! I’m 22 years old and have had experience with children from day one - we all start out as infants, right?! More formally, I have been baby-sitting and volunteering with children for the past nine years. I love working with children because it allows me to connect with my youth and see the world through children’s eyes. Each time I leave an afternoon or evening of baby-sitting, I always find that I take a new lesson that a child has taught me with me - to look, listen and then cross the street, that the leaves on a tree really do look prettier in the fall, that coloring outside the lines is more fun than coloring inside the lines, and that sharing can simply mean parting with the coins in my cup holder and handing them over to someone else. Hi! My name is Cassiopeia, but you can call me Cassi. I am a 22 year old graduate of George Mason University. I received my Bachelors degree in History and plan on continuing my college career and getting a Masters in education, as well as a plan to becoming a teacher, meaning I fully plan on surrounding myself with kids for the rest of my life! For the past year I watched 5 kids ranging in ages 6 months to 10 years of age and would occasionally watch their 2 cousins as well…. that’s a total of 7, I repeat 7, youngsters running or crawling around, and it was amazing! There was never a dull moment there, and thats how I like it. I like to stay busy and keep myself and the kids always stimulated by doing something- whether it be drawing or dancing around like no ones watching! I have become so close with that family the kids call me Auntie now. I only mention that because I want you to know that I wouldn’t look at watching your kids differently. For me its not that I would be coming over to just watch your kids but rather to spend time with them/hang out with them be some one they can have fun with as well as look up to not just one or the other. Kids, older folk and pets of all kinds rate high on my list of favorites ;*) Although originally from Connecticut and a lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, for these last few years I’ve lived in a small town in central Italy where it truly, “takes a village to raise a child…”

I’ve recently arrived for an extended stay in Fairfax County and am rejoining the ASAPS staff. Some background: I’ve raised three wonderful young women now 25, 23 and 20, and have been a teacher, writer and editor during various intervals in my life. During college years I was an au pair in Georgetown for the Stevens family, and also lived with a family in Germany for ten weeks! My Smith College degree is in Education & Child Study; during my twenties I taught mainly 6-8th grades, but recently held preschool positions - in locations as diverse as Falls Church and Perugia, Italy.

I’m available most any day to play with your children (and perhaps teach them a bit of Italian?) I’m sporty and don’t mind roughing-it outdoors even in cold weather!

I also enjoy cooking, especially pasta!

My five-pound Japanese Chin, Tartufo, is a bit fragile, but he has soft hair and loves being pet and adored! If the children are not too rough, I can bring him with me to entertain them with his playful antics. Ciao 4 Niao!

Hi! My name is Emily and I am twenty-one years old. I am a senior at George Mason University, studying Art and Visual Technology with a concentration in Graphic Information Design. I am originally from Richmond, Virginia, where I began babysitting neighbors and family friends at the age of 12. My favorite memories as a child are reading, playing outside, and doing craft projects! My interest in working with kids really began when I became a camper at Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg, Virginia at age 10. I absolutely loved summer camp, and I never wanted to go home when the two weeks were up! I was a camper there for ten years, a “Counselor in Training” for two, then a counselor for two years. I worked with campers ages 6-16 teaching them swim lessons, water polo classes, and various arts and crafts activities, and of course leading songs around the campfire. Although my major is in the creative field, I would like to somehow incorporate my interest in working with kids into my career, even if it is just teaching in the Arts at a local community center. I love teaching children new things and seeing their excitement as they grow and learn. I am also an outdoor enthusiast, and also took a month-long leadership expedition course last summer through NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), which sparked an entirely new interest in camping, hiking, kayaking, and sailing! I love water sports, and I am starting my fourth season on the George Mason Women’s Varsity Rowing Team. Although I may initially come off as shy, I open up quickly and love to have fun. I attended St. Leo the Great from k-8th grade, Fairfax for High School, and graduated with a Communication Studies Degree from West Virginia University in spring of 2007. I completed my undergrad at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Sociology with a minor in Psychology in Lynchburg. I have spent the last three summers working at summer day camps. Camp Kum-ba-yah in Lynchburg and then I spent this past summer working at the summer camp at Congressional Schools in Falls Church. I am from a large family of 6 kids, and as a mom I’ve always had a house full of kids. I love animals too and I have 2 dogs and 2 cats.

I work full time in a Federal Government Agency, but I get off work at 3:30 pm which allows me plenty of time to watch your children, and also on the week ends. I love kids of all ages, and I especially love babies, and I would treat your children as if they were my own. I am very motherly and I’ve been nicknamed “Happy” because I’m always smiling and in a happy positive mood. I love working out at the gym, walking and jogging, and gardening. I also enjoy scrapbooking, arts and crafts and reading. I used to have my own home childcare business when my children were younger and I plan to do childcare fulltime again when I retire. Hello! My name is Kristen and I love kids!! I am 24 years old and I’m finishing up my M.M. at Catholic University. I am also entertaining the idea of teaching elementary school music after graduation. I live in Alexandria, VA but I don’t mind doing a little driving if you need me for a substantial amount of time. I started babysitting my neighbors’ children in Virginia Beach when I was 12 and while friends moved on to other fields, I just kept on sitting! I have been babysitting since 2003 in the DC area and have also spent summers taking care of my niece, nephew and young cousins in Virginia Beach. Hi, I am Kristin! I am 27 years old and a recent graduate from Virginia Tech with my Masters degree in architecture. I have 17 years of childcare experience from growing up as the oldest child (by 6 years) in a single parent home and caring for my younger sibling as well as babysitting for children of family, friends, and neighbors over the years. Recently most of my childcare experience has revolved around helping care for my 2-½ year old niece (pictured here), which is a joy!

Creativity is an integral part of my daily life and one of the reasons that I really enjoy working with children. I am always inspired by how imaginative children are and spending time with them challenges me to see the world differently. It also gives me a chance to get back in touch with my silly side and have some fun!

It is important to me that I be a good influence to the children I interact with by encouraging them to play games, exercise, and make things rather than watch TV or play video games. I think that being interactive with children makes the time we spend together more memorable and enjoyable for them, as well as myself. I want your children to look forward to the time they will spend with me!

Because of my love for children, I decided to pursue a career focused on their development. Hello, my name is Luke, and I live in Falls Church. Welcome to my biography…I am 29, and currently a student at NOVA Annandale. In pursuit of a degree in secondary education, I hope to obtain my Bachelors in 2010 for Health/Phys Ed. Hi! My name is Maggie and I am 22 years old. I grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for two years studying nursing. I moved into the area a couple years ago and am now attending George Mason University to study Early Childhood Education. I have always loved being around children, whether it was babysitting since I was thirteen, wanting to be a nurse in a Children’s Hospital, or being an elementary education teacher. My name is Mariana. I was born in Bogota, Colombia, but I have lived most of my life in the US. Ever since my two little brothers, who are 8 and 11 now, were born, I realized I loved kids and playing with kids. I have worked with kids for over ten years now and I love it. I have been a counselor as well and have handled many kids at a time. I’ve been challenged to create different activities that will retain a child’s attention for a long time. Ultimately, I believe that while babysitting for a family it is important to develop a friendly relationship with the parents as well as with the kids.

Hi, I’m Nikki. I am 30 years old and moved to NOVA from the Gulf Coast of Florida nearly 3 years ago. As an Army brat, I have lived all over the world, and I think that the experiences that I had in all those travels have really influenced who I have become. I have had about 18 years of child care experience. I first started babysitting when I was in middle school and have cared for many families for a number of years, with children ranging in age from newborns to pre-teens. When I was 17, my family opened a child care which I worked in until 2006. I started out as the assistant teacher in the school age program, and when school started, I became the lead teacher of the before and after school program while I attended college. Through the years I have been the lead teacher in the 2 year old, 3 year old, and pre-k classes before I became the Assistant Director of the center. While I was Assistant Director, I was constantly in all of our classrooms (1yo to School-Age) on a regular basis, so I have experience with children of all ages. Our center was one of the largest in the county, and a major portion of families were sent to us through the county recommendations, so I have experience with children with not only special family situations, but also special needs. I have my AA in Early Childhood Education (pre-school to early elementary age children), a BA in Literature and I am fully certified through the State of Florida in childcare, specifically developmentally appropriate practices and working with children with special needs. I love living in the Metro area for the fact that there is so much to do around here for children (and the kid at heart, which I still am!). The many different fairs, festivals, and museums around the area still interest me, and I try to experience as many different ones as I can. The culture that the area has to offer is something that every child should experience, to help them grow and become the adult they are destined to be. I love arts and crafts, reading, and exploring the area, and would love to do the these activities with your child/children.

Just to let you know a little about myself…

I have been playing softball ever since I can remember. For the past three years, I have been playing on the Division I team at Mason. However, this year I have decided to hang up my cleats. I was also a cheerleader all four years of high school. Therefore, I consider myself a very unique person because I have all the girlyness of a cheerleader and all the seriousness and athleticism of a softball player in me (not that cheerleading does not require athleticism, because it does…but you know what I mean). I am currently studying Finance at Mason and I love it. I have always been a very academic person and thus would be very open to helping children with their studies.

I am also an ANIMAL LOVER so pets will never be a problem! I love to cook as well. I look forward to meeting you and your children!

Hi, I’m Becca! I am a part-time student at George Mason University, where I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Counseling and Development to become an elementary school counselor. I work part-time as a Faculty Advisor for a local educational organization where I teach leadership skills like working in groups and conflict resolution to middle school students. Although most of my professional experience is working with middle and high school students, I have been caring for babies and toddlers for over 10 years as a baby-sitter, taught pre-K Sunday school while in high school, and volunteered at a local elementary school while in college.

I am an active person so I love playing sports, going on walks, and just goofing off in general. I am also a bookworm, and would love to read to your child or help him or her with their homework if they are of school age. If they enjoy crafts I would be happy to test my creativity and I’m sure they could teach me a thing or two! I love animals, so pets definitely are not a problem and I am First Aid certified. My name is Ryan, I am 20 years old and am from Everett, WA though I currently live in Alexandria, VA with my wife. I am enrolled in school for this summer and I plan on pursuing a career as an EMT/Firefighter. I have been working with children ages two and up since I was 13. More recently I have been babysitting my cousin Abbie since she was born late August of 08. My first experience with children was holding a newborn in my arms while I volunteered at the INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital in the Labor and Delivery Section. During my early years of college, I worked at a Martial Arts Studio as a part-time instructor where I not only taught class, but also supervised 20-30 children ranging from the ages of 5-12 in the After School Program and Summer Camp. Currently, I volunteer as a Sunday School Teacher at my church in Herndon where I teach and lead worship for children from the ages of 3-5.
